More than 30,000 men and women worked in the South Portland Shipyards building hundreds of "Liberty Ships" and British "Ocean Class" ships during WWII. The South Portland Shipyard Society and others solicited donations and won approval
for the erection of a memorial to these workers. Guest speakers included former Maine Governor Ken Curtis, Boris Korotyaev,Vice President of the Russian Northern Convoy Brotherhood, Congressman John Baldacci, City Manager,Jeffrey Jordan, and Frederic L. Thompson.
